Sanitation Marketing PNG & Indonesia

Testing and modelling sanitation marketing in rural communities in Lombok and Papua New Guinea

Specific objectives are:

  1. Increase access to affordable appropriate gender sensitive demand driven sanitation services in rural communities in PNG and Indonesia by supporting the establishment of 8 village-based, women-led sanitation enterprises.
  2. Generate sanitation and hygiene demand and change at the community level by engaging women in the agenda setting in rural communities including dialogue building with community leaders, government staff and civil society groups.

The Project will benefit from lessons learnt from Live & Learn water supply and sanitation projects in Fiji and the Solomon Islands where social enterprises was established by women to provide water, sanitation and hygiene service to vulnerable communities. The innovative sanitation marketing approach assured operation and maintenance was provided by the sanitation enterprises, which based in the villages within operational reach of the consumer. The Project aligns with the strategies and priorities of the provincial government in West New Britain Province and the Provincial Government in Indonesia. This alignment enhances opportunities for taking the sanitation models to scale after the Project completion and integrate them in government policies.
