HOPE: Helping Our Planet Earth
Project Aim: To enhance education for sustainability in Fijian primary schools.
Activities: As part of the Vodafone funded HOPE programme in 2005, Live & Learn and the Ministry of Education conducted HOPE teacher training in over 100 schools and HOPE student leadership workshops for over 100 students. Students from 83 primary schools in Lautoka, Labasa and Suva participated in student-led HOPE initiatives. A HOPE video was been developed through this initiative, with additional support from Marisla Foundation (through Global Green Grants).
A HOPE Teachers Guide, funded by the Australian High Commission (Direct Aid Program) has also been developed, providing teachers and educators with practical ways of involving and motivating students to acting sustainably. The HOPE Guide incorporates environmental and development themed activities in the existing formal education curriculum and has been trialed with teachers, students and a group of lecturers from the Fiji College of Advanced Education ( Teacher Training College ). The HOPE Teachers Guide is provided in a HOPE toolkit which includes two Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) board games, stickers, the HOPE DVD and information booklet on the HOPE philosophy and process.
