School resilience to natural disasters

This project works with children, local and national education authorities to develop and introduce a 'safe school' model in schools. It also strengthens the  Ministry of Education, local and related authorities and (civil society organizations)’s capacity on the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) measures at schools.

Project achievements:

  • Consultation with NGOs and relevant agencies for synergy in support to DRR in education
  • Introduce Safe School model to the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) and consult the application of safe school model.
  • Orientation workshop has been conducted in Quang Tri with 39 participants to introduce the concept and the importance of safe school, and experiences from Vietnam and many countries in DRR education, Climate Change Adaptation and Safe School
  • Rapid assessment with schools, teachers, students and relevant stakeholders (DOET, Red Cross) has been conducted to discuss the next steps of safe school model and test the VCA tools for children.
  • Technical support to perform VCA training, review test drill and VCA at schools was conducted in Quang Tri.
  • Draft of Safe School guideline and its annexes were completed.
  • Relevant materials have been shared and discussed with UNESCO regards to the development of the School Assessment Tool and School Disaster Preparedness Plan between UNESCO and MOET.


Promote Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) integration into the education sector

This project is being Implemented as a partner of Joint Advocacy Networking Initiative (JANI) in Viet Nam. The objective of the project is to  promote DRR integration into the education sector. The project will benefit approximately 6,000 people, including 4,000 students and 2,000 members of the public.

Achievements so far:

  •  Manual on DRR teaching and learning for teachers was reviewed by experts from MOET, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Hanoi University of Education, Vietnam Education and Science Institute, Disaster Management Center, NGOs. It was approved by MOET and reprinted by World Vision, Save the Children International, CARE International in Vietnam, Plan International in Viet Nam.
  • A deck of DRR cards for primary and secondary students is being developed, covering description of disaster/hazards, potential impacts of the disaster/hazard, and actions children should and should not take before, during and after disasters.
  •  A manual on organizing DRR activities at schools in Viet Nam is being developed focusing on case study and references of good practices on DRR/CCA education collected from JANI members and other organizations in Viet Nam.
